Good question Nicole, I love apples as snacks in the office but if they are too hard, its not pleasant!

Apples are best keep in the fridge, or a cool dry place. The most common problem ruining your apples in going to be a yeast or mould infection – so keep them away from warm, damp areas! If you are using apples for baking or cooking for example, you can add some lemon juice on top of them to keep their nice colour – once the inside of an apple is exposed to the air it begins to react with the oxygen (oxidise), causing a brownish colour – the lemon juice stops this!

Great question Nicole, and great answer Karen! I use to go apple picking every autumn, and had apples for the whole winter. It was great. What was my trick for keeping them fresh for so long? our basement at home! Apples require a little bit of coolness in order to stay fresh when stored. Warmth causes them to ripen very quickly, and eventually dry out to a wrinkly old apple, which like Karen explains, is due to a mould infection. Cool temperatures alone can keep them fresh and ready to eat for several months 🙂 Hope that helps!
