It’s entirely possible Caoimhe! Already many prototypes are being designed and tested by many researchers.

But first of all think, what would be required for a flying car? Wings obviously, but the car would probably have to made of a lighter, or less dense material (birds have hollow bones to allow them to fly). We would also need different engines, and where would they be positioned? Finally we would have to decide just how high they would fly – would we need a pressurised inside like a plane?

This article goes into some nice detail!

Spot on. Some cars can already fly actually and they don’t necessarily need wings either! Some use enormous fans to blow themselves up.
Another really cool way of flying, which they’re working on right now, is to blast light at the ground (yep, light!) If you do this enough and with enough power scientists have lifted things off the ground! Very futuristic!
I think we’re a bit away from Futurama or Star Wars yet though…. Maybe you could become a scientist and invent it!?

It is! That dream has already been turned into reality 🙂 Two “flying cars” are already nearly ready to hit the roads (and I guess the skies too)! The “Transition” flying car looks like a small airplane with foldable wings, but you can’t just push a button and fly over traffic jams yet 🙁 and it costs over a quarter million dollars… which is as expensive as a new home. So we still have a long ways to create the perfect flying car like in the jetsons tv show. Great question Caoimhe 🙂
