Great question Jack! We all use robots during our every day life… and I depend on these for my research, but I never take the time to really think about how they are made. Now, how long DOES it take to build a robot? well not long at all (just a few minutes) if it’s a simple robot that performs simple tasks, but for more complex robots like the ones that I use it might take several months! My submersible robots go to very deep depths in the ocean and so they have to be able to perform complex tasks (gently collecting animals, placing cores in the ground, etc) while withstanding very high pressures and very cold temperatures (some times very warm ones too when we work with underwater volcanoes). This is a trailor to the great documentary about James Cameron plunge to the deepest part of the ocean in his deepsea submersible robot (http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/environment/habitats-environment/habitats-oceans-env/james-cameron-mariana/). You should watch it! Enjoy 🙂
